Research Summary

My research focuses on the noninvasive distinction of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) from simple hepatic steatosis. We are investigating the possibility that non-invasive MRI markers of steatosis, inflammation and fibrosis will provide equivalent and/or additional diagnostic information to liver biopsy in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Specifically, we are evaluating apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values derived from diffusion MR imaging as well as MR spectroscopic (MRS) markers (lipids, water, and choline containing compounds) as possible diagnostic markers of NASH. ADC values and MRS markers may also correlate with the stage of fibrosis in NASH.
